📄 What you'll create
A first draft document Ready for editing in the Pergamon editor |
Before you begin
Before starting an AI Assembly session, make sure you have the following ready.
- Know your target market. AI Assembly uses frameworks that are configured for specific markets and compliance requirements. You'll need to know where your product will be sold — for example, the European Union (CE mark) or the United States — so you can select the right framework.
-
Gather your AI resources. AI Assembly works best when you give it as much product context as possible. Have the following files ready before you start:
- Product images (JPG, PNG) - photos of the product, its parts, labels, and markings
- Product videos (MP4) - unboxing or feature walkthrough videos work well
- Product specification documents (PDF, TXT) - datasheets, spec sheets, safety reports
- Audio files (MP3) - product descriptions or feature explanations
You can upload multiple files at once. Each file must be 12 MB or smaller. If a file exceeds this limit, Pergamon will show an error and the file will not be uploaded. If your files are larger than 12 MB, compress them before uploading. For supported file formats, see Supported file formats for AI resources in Step 3.
-
Check your Pergami token balance. AI Assembly consumes Pergami tokens - the credits used for AI features in Pergamon. Before you start, check your current balance in the top-right corner of the screen. A typical assembly session consumes:
- 1 token for the AI assembly process
- 1 token per image uploaded as a reference file
- 2 tokens per text or audio file uploaded
- 3 tokens per video file uploaded
-
1 token to create the final Pergamon Document
Tokens are non-refundable once assembly processing starts. Make sure your AI resource files are ready before confirming.
Note
Pergami is Pergamon's built-in AI engine. It powers the assembly process, answers questions from your uploaded files, and runs AI prompts within your documents. Pergami tokens are the credits consumed whenever you use AI features in Pergamon.
How to start AI Assembly
There are two ways to start AI Assembly. Both paths converge at the same mode selection screen — the steps from Step 2 onwards are identical regardless of which entry point you use.
Option A: From the Home page (faster)
Use this option when you already know your product type and want to get to assembly quickly.
- In the left sidebar, click Home.
- In the search field, type your product name — for example, toaster. Matching framework cards appear in the grid.
- Find the card that matches your target market — for example, EU+UK, US, or AUS — and hover over it.
- Click Create document.
Pergamon pre-selects the framework and any market configuration embedded in the card. You are taken directly to the mode selection screen. Any remaining selections, for example, document format - will be surfaced during the assembly process.
Skip to Step 2: Choose AI Assembly.
Option B: From Content Assembly (full control)
Use this option when you need to navigate through the full framework and market selection, or when your product isn't surfaced by the Home page search.
Continue to Step 1 below.
Step 1: Navigate to your framework — Content Assembly only
A framework is a pre-configured template that defines the structure, compliance requirements, and content rules to create your document. Frameworks are set up by the Pergamon team and vary by target market, retailer requirements, and product category.
To select a framework:
- In the left sidebar, click Content assembly. The Create a New Document screen opens, showing all available frameworks.
-
Find your framework. You can:
- Scroll through the list
- Type a keyword in the Search field to filter by name
- Use the All categories dropdown to filter by regulatory standard (for example, EU standards) or by the name if you know it.
Some frameworks have an info icon (ⓘ) next to their name. Click it to read a short description of what the framework covers.
- Select a framework by clicking it, or by using the arrow keys to navigate and pressing Enter or → to select.
-
Depending on your framework, you may need to make one or more sub-selections — for example, your target market (North America, Europe, Japan) and compliance variant (CE only, UKCA only, or both). Each selection narrows the framework to your specific requirements.
Tip
Use the ← back arrow to go up one level if you make a wrong selection. Use the ↺ reset icon to start over from the beginning.
- Continue selecting until you reach the product type level — for example, Grills, toasters and similar portable cooking appliances → Toaster. Selecting the final product type moves you to the next screen. A brief loading indicator appears during each transition.
How deep will I need to go?
The number of selection levels depends on how the framework is configured. Some frameworks have two levels; others have five or more. Each level narrows the template to your exact product and market combination.
Step 2: Choose AI assembly
Pergamon asks how you want to create your document. You'll see two options:
- AI Draft Mode — Pergami guides you through the process. You upload files to your AI resources library and answer guided questions; AI builds the first draft. This is the workflow covered in this tutorial.
- Manual Mode — You work through the questionnaire manually, without AI assistance. No AI token cost.
Click Start AI Draft to begin AI Assembly.
Note
AI Draft Mode works best when you have product materials to upload — images, videos, documents, or audio files. Pergami uses these to answer as many assembly questions as possible automatically. If you have no files to upload, consider using Manual Mode instead — you'll answer all questions yourself with no AI token cost.
Step 3: Upload your AI resources
AI Assembly uses your AI resources library to understand your product and answer assembly questions automatically.
Upload files that are directly relevant to the product you're documenting - focused, accurate materials help Pergami give better answers. Uploading a large number of files, or files that contain conflicting information, can make it harder for Pergami to determine the correct answer and may result in more questions being pushed back to you for manual input.
To upload AI resources:
- On the upload screen, drag and drop your files into the upload area, or click Browse files to open a file picker.
-
Each uploaded file appears in a list on the right, showing its filename and token cost.
Note
Token costs may not apply to your Pergamon domain If you don't see a token counter at the top right, continue following the on-screen flow.
File type Token cost per file Image JPG, PNG 1 token Text PDF, TXT 2 tokens Audio MP3 2 tokens Video MP4 3 tokens - To remove a file, click the ⊗ icon next to it. A confirmation message appears briefly and the token counter updates immediately.
- The running total of tokens for your uploaded files is shown in the Tokens counter in the top-right corner of the panel.
- When you're ready, click Next Step. This button activates once at least one file has been uploaded.
Supported file formats for AI resources
| Category | Accepted formats |
|---|---|
| Images | .jpg .jpeg .png .gif .bmp .heic .tiff .webp |
| Video | .mp4 .mov .avi .webm .3gp |
| Audio | .mp3 .wav .flac .ogg .wma |
| Documents | .pdf .doc .docx .html |
| Archives | .zip |
Pergamon accepts 40+ file types. The list above covers the most commonly used formats. Each file must be 12 MB or smaller.
Step 4: Review and confirm token usage
Before assembly begins, Pergamon shows you a summary of the tokens that will be deducted from your account.
Note
Token costs may not apply to your Pergamon account. If you don't see a token confirmation screen, continue following the on-screen flow.
The confirmation screen shows two sections:
AI tasks and Token cost (Charged now)
These tokens are deducted immediately when you confirm. The document creation token is charged later, in Step 7, when you actually create the document. It is not deducted now.
To confirm:
- Review the token breakdown.
- Check the box: I understand that [N] Pergami tokens will be deducted from my account immediately.
- Click Confirm and start AI assembly.
Important
Token deductions for the assembly process and AI resources library are non-refundable once you click Confirm and start AI assembly. If you need to make changes to your files, click Cancel to go back.
Step 5: Answer questions during assembly
Once you confirm, Pergami begins processing your AI resource files and assembling your document. This is the core of the AI Assembly workflow.
What happens during assembly
What happens during assembly
Once assembly starts, the screen shows two areas working in parallel:
- Processing area — Displays the current assembly state, a few facts about your product while you wait, and any questions Pergami needs you to answer.
- Progress panel — Tracks assembly completion (0–100%) and logs every question answered so far, showing whether each was answered by you or by Pergami.
Assembly reaches 100% only after all questions including any that require your input have been answered.
How Pergami answers questions automatically
As Pergami processes your uploaded AI resource files, it answers questions it can resolve from the resources you uploaded. For example, if your video clearly shows a toaster with three functions - Toast, Defrost, and Reheat, Pergami will answer the question about available functions automatically.
Automatically answered questions appear in the right panel with a bot icon (🤖). They default to unaccepted you'll need to review and confirm them in Step 6.
How to answer questions when prompted
When Pergami needs information it cannot determine from your uploaded files, it pauses and presents a question for you to answer. Questions can be displayed in the following formats:
List selection: A list of options (for example, selecting the document format: Booklet or Leaflet). Click an option or use the arrow keys to select, then press Enter.
Checkbox selection: A Yes/No question, or a question with descriptive answer options. Select one option and click Next.
Conditional selection: Some Yes/No questions reveal follow-up options when you select Yes. Select Yes to expand the sub-options, then choose the option that applies. Selecting No collapses the sub-options and no further input is needed.
Note
The first option is highlighted with a blue border by default — this indicates keyboard focus, not your selection. Click the option you want to select it, or use the arrow keys to move focus and press Space to select and Enter to confirm the answer.
Some questions have a help icon (?) next to them. Click it to open a guidance panel with examples, images, or reference information to help you answer accurately. This is particularly useful for questions that reference compliance standards or technical specifications.
Note
Some questions may reference industry or regulatory standards — for example, IEC safety symbols. If you're unsure how to answer, use the ? help icon or refer to your product's safety report or datasheet.
After you submit an answer, Pergami logs it in the right panel with a person icon and resumes processing.
Defer a question
If you're not ready to answer a question, click Skip at the bottom. Skipped questions may reappear in a different form before assembly completes, not necessarily identical to the original.
Monitor assembly progress
The right panel logs every question as it's answered, collapsed by default to keep the list manageable. Click the ∧ chevron next to any question to expand it and see the full question and answer.
Restarting assembly with new files
To add more files to your AI resources library and restart the assembly, click the ⋯ menu in the top-right corner and select Restart mode. A confirmation dialog will appear, click Restart mode to confirm.
This takes you to the AI resources library screen, where already-processed files are shown with a Success status. Add your new files using drag and drop or Browse files. Only newly added files will consume additional tokens. Click Next Step to confirm and restart the assembly from the beginning.
Answering questions manually
If you need to answer a question manually while Pergami is processing, click Answer manually at the bottom of the left panel. This temporarily interrupts the AI assembly and presents the current question for you to answer. Once you submit your answer, AI assembly resumes processing automatically.
Switch assembly modes
To switch between AI Draft Mode and Manual Mode, click the ⋯ menu and select Change mode.
Restart assembly
To start completely from scratch including re-selecting your framework, click the ⋯ menu and select Restart.
Step 6: Review your answers
When assembly reaches 100%, Pergamon moves you to the Review & Confirm Answers screen.
This screen shows every question from the assembly both user-answered and AI-answered in a table. Each row has a toggle switch on the right under the Accept column.
Default toggle states
- User-answered questions: accepted by default (toggle on, green).
- AI-answered questions: unaccepted by default (toggle off, grey). This is intentional — Pergami requires you to explicitly review AI answers before accepting them, since they are derived from your AI resources and should be verified for accuracy.
Note
AI-answered questions are unaccepted by default. Review each one carefully before accepting.
Reviewing and accepting answers
Go through each AI-answered question (marked with the bot icon 🤖). Expand the row to read the full question and Pergami's answer, then toggle it to accepted if the answer is correct.
To accept all answers at once including AI-answered ones — toggle Accept all answers at the bottom right of the screen. Use this only after you've reviewed the AI answers.
Revising answers
To revise a user-answered question, toggle its Accept switch off, then click ↩ Revise answers. The assembly flow reopens with your previously accepted answers auto-filled. Any questions you toggled off — plus all AI-answered questions — are re-presented for you to answer manually.
Step 7: Create your document
To create your document:
- In the Document Name field, enter a name for your document — for example, User manual – Toaster Pro X.
- The Language field is pre-set and cannot be changed.
-
Create Publication is toggled on by default.
What is a publication?
A publication groups related documents — cover page, main pages, and back page — into a single container that forms your complete final manual. Leave this on to create a publication container automatically alongside your document.
- In the sub-panel, check the Create document in Pergamon checkbox. This is required to create the document and activate the Create button. Checking this box deducts 1 Pergami token from your account when you click Create. Your current token balance is shown in the sub-panel so you can confirm you have sufficient tokens before proceeding.
- Click Create.
Pergamon generates your document. When it's ready, a confirmation screen appears.
- Click View document to open your first draft in the Pergamon editor, or click Homepage to return to the Pergamon home screen and access the document later from your Documents hub.
Note
Your AI resource files are automatically attached to the created document. You can view and manage these files anytime under the AI resources tab in the Pergamon editor. They act as a knowledge base for Pergami when you run AI prompts within the document.
What's next
The document created by AI Assembly is a structured first draft — it will need editing before it's ready to publish. In the Pergamon editor, you can fill in placeholders, run AI prompts, add images and tables, apply styles, and collaborate with your team.
