The Pergamon Document Editor uses single-session editing mode for all editing sessions. In this mode, only one user at a time can actively edit the document - either the author or a collaborator with Full access (view and edit) permissions. When editing begins, Pergamon locks the document to prevent changes from other users until the session ends.
To learn more on how it works, see About single-session editing mode.
Prerequisites
You are the author of the document or a collaborator who has been granted Full access (view and edit) by the author in Access Control.
The document is not currently locked by another collaborator.
Enable single-session editing mode
In the left navigation sidebar, choose Projects › Documents to open the Documents Hub.
-
In the Documents Hub, locate the document you want to edit.
The hub lists documents with details such as Name, Doc ID, Author, Language, Status, and more.
Click on the document ID to open it in the Document Editor.
-
In the Document Editor, click Edit in the upper-right corner.
The editor enters single-session editing mode.
The session indicator at the bottom displays:
Begin editing the document. Pergamon autosaves changes every three minutes.
Exit single-session editing mode
You can end your editing session in either of the following ways:
Option 1 — Click the Lock icon
In the session indicator, select the Lock icon.
The document is unlocked and becomes editable for other collaborators with Full access.
Option 2 — Leave the document
Close or navigate away from the editor.
-
In the confirmation dialog, choose one of the following:
Save and leave — Save your latest changes and unlock the document.
Leave without saving — Exit without saving and unlock the document.
The dialog also displays:
“Leaving now will let collaborators with full access edit this document."
After you exit, any collaborator with Full access can open and edit the document in their own single-session editing mode.
Usage considerations
If you close the browser tab without leaving properly, the document remains locked until you reopen it or until Pergamon automatically clears the lock at midnight (server time).
Locks control edit access only; they do not restrict document visibility.
Only one editing session can be active per document at a time.

Troubleshooting
| Issue | Cause | Resolution |
|---|---|---|
| A collaborator cannot click Edit; the button is disabled. | The document is locked by another active editing session. | Wait until the current session ends or the system releases the lock at midnight (server time). |
