Merge and unmerge table cells
You can merge table cells to create section headers, wider text areas, or combined fields within a table. Merged cells can also be unmerged at any time to restore the original structure.
Merge cells
- Open the table in edit mode
Click anywhere inside the table. The table opens in full edit view. Select the cells you want to merge
Select adjacent cells only. Cells must be next to each other and form a continuous block.Use your keyboard to multi-select cells:
- Mac: ⌘ Command + click
- Windows: Ctrl + click
Note:
You can only merge cells that are directly next to each other (horizontally or vertically).
Non-adjacent selections (for example, selecting the first and last cell while skipping the middle cell) are not supported.Merge the selected cells
On the right-side toolbar, click Merge cell.If the Merge cell button is disabled, check your selection. The selected cells must be adjacent and continuous.
Selection rules for merging
To merge cells successfully, your selection must follow these rules:
Allowed selections
- Cells in the same row
- Cells in the same column
- A rectangular group of cells
Examples:
- Selecting two side-by-side cells
- Selecting multiple cells in a column
- Selecting a block of cells (2×2, 3×2, etc.)
Not allowed
- Non-contiguous selections (cells with gaps)
- Selecting cells that skip rows or columns
- Irregular shapes (for example, L-shaped selections)
Examples:
- Selecting the first and last cell in a column while skipping the middle
- Selecting cells that are not directly connected
In these cases, the Merge cell option will not be available.
Unmerge cells
- Open the table in edit mode
- Click inside the merged cell
- On the right-side toolbar, click Unmerge cell
The table returns to its original structure.
Notes
- Tables use a structured layout to ensure consistent rendering across outputs (such as PDF and InDesign)
- Because of this, advanced table behaviors like merging non-adjacent cells are not supported
Troubleshooting
Merge option is disabled
Cause
The selected cells are not adjacent or do not form a continuous block.
Fix
- Select cells that are directly next to each other
- Avoid skipping rows or columns
- Ensure the selection forms a rectangle or straight line
