What is Paragraph Layout?
The Paragraph Layout option determines how a paragraph interacts with the column structure in the document. It allows users to format paragraphs to occupy a single column, split across multiple columns, or span multiple columns. This feature is essential for documents with complex layouts, such as newsletters, magazines, or technical manuals.
Why Use Paragraph Layout?
- Enhance Visual Appeal: Format paragraphs to suit the document’s design, creating a balanced and organized appearance.
- Improve Readability: Adjust how content flows across columns for better accessibility.
- Custom Layouts: Manage paragraph placement to fit multi-column or single-column designs seamlessly.
Measurement Values
- Base: Retains the default paragraph layout for the document.
- Single Column: Keeps the paragraph within one column of the document.
- Split Columns: Divides the paragraph content into multiple columns within the layout.
- Span Columns: Allows the paragraph to extend across multiple columns, overriding column breaks.
To Set Paragraph Layout
Note: To apply advanced paragraph formatting on global content,
turn on the toggle Advanced formatting for global content in
Content attributes.
- Select the paragraph where you want to apply this setting.
- Click on the layout switcher to display the Content Attributes Panel.
- Under the Paragraph Formatting section, locate the Paragraph Layout dropdown.
- Choose one of the following options:
- Base: Keeps the default paragraph layout.
- Single Column: Ensures the paragraph stays within one column.
- Split Columns: Divides the paragraph into multiple smaller columns.
- Amount of Columns: Use the stepper (up/down arrows) to specify the number of columns (e.g., 2, 3, or more).
- Inside Gutter: Adjust the spacing between the columns as a percentage of the total width.
- Outside Gutter: Set the spacing outside the columns relative to the text block's edges.
- Span Columns: Stretches the paragraph across all columns in the layout.
- Configure the Amount of Columns field to specify how many columns the paragraph should span.
- Click Save to apply your changes.
You can also apply Paragraph Layout settings to tables. To do this, apply the setting to the first content in the table (e.g., the text in the first column, first row) to ensure the layout adjustments take effect for the entire table.
Example Use Case
For a title or heading that needs to extend across all columns in a multi-column layout:
- Use Span Columns to make the heading visually prominent.
